SMHS meeting: Member's Evening

15 Jul 2015

Our July meeting is known as Members' Night which creates an opportunity for members to bring along an item of special interest to show and tell to the group. The evening is so popular that this year we had to introduce a time limit - with only our Chairman running over!

We were delighted to welcome two new members, Chris W, who has been attending as a non-member for some time, and Guy, a friend of Malcolm Grace. We were also pleased to be reacquainted with David Joyce (late 9th and 12th Royal Lancers) and Lynda (former RAF Nurse) who we met for the first time at Seahaven Armed Forces Day in June. The newcomers had come prepared. David had a German 1914 mortar casing beautifully engraved and embossed with Egyptian themed artwork and Chris, a small arms enthusiast, brought a number of revolvers, which garnered huge interest.

Colin Brown (usurped as SMHS's newest member after the briefest of periods), brought along a painting of his Father dating back to his 1940s service in the 49th Middlesex Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment - when Colin held the painting up the likeness was remarkable.

Rob Harvey (who always shines on Members' Night) had carefully packed his loving-crafted model tanks, replicas of actual tanks from the wars in Iraq (a US M1A1 Abrams main battle tank) and Chechnya (a Russian T90).

There was time for members to mix and discuss their treasures before the raffle, just a few were left when the barmaid popped up to collect the glasses and glancing at Pete Hibbs' MG34, a German recoil-operated, air-cooled machine gun, resting casually on its bipod on the table was heard to utter for a minute then I thought that was a gun!

Our December meeting will now be another Members Evening to give everyone further opportunity to share their items of interest to the group.
